Such wonderful times I shared with mi mas estimada abuela. When I was little she let me help her in the garden house and taught me how to throw a pot. A lot of my early efforts were downright pitiful, but she proudly displayed every one.
I remember one particular time. She loved mysteries and she read in the paper that one of her all-time favorite authors was going to be at one of the Phoenix bookstores. She wanted to meet her and I was to go along. I really didn't want to as I had recently broken my wrist, but with the promise of lunch at a swanky hotel, how could I say no and off we went. Talk about rock star fans. This little lady was every bit the fan when she caught sight of Mary Higgins Clark! I can tell you the excitement was contagious. Not only did Ms. Clark sign my grandmother's book, but signed my cast as well. My grandmother was on cloud nine for weeks! Mary Higgins Clark's 'Remember The Children', autographed to my grandmother, is now mine and a very special treasure as it was to my grandmother.
From the time, my son, Tony, was old enough to walk, he was included in the garden house rounds, only he called it the flower house. I can remember the patience my grandmother took with little Tony teaching him how to do things. This taught me a lot, too. There's nothing like a pat on the back to bring out the best in a person. Muchas gracias, mi maravillosa abuela. Yo te amo.
